Albert Barnes (1908-1982) joined DC Thomson in 1928, rising to chief sub-editor of the story paper The Wizard. When Thomsons launched The Dandy in 1937, the brainchild of William Blain, Barnes was appointed editor. From a suggestion by Blain, Barnes co-created Desperate Dan with artist Dudley D. Watkins, who lived only four doors from him, and wrote his adventures for many years. He remained editor of The Dandy with the exception of 1940 to 1946, when he served in the Royal Navy, until he retired in April 1982, replaced by David Torrie. He died on 19 December 1982.
