Bertram John Lamb was born in Holloway, London, in the second quarter of 1887, son of Henry Lamb, an Inland Revenue examiner, and his wife Sarah. By 1911 he was a journalist working for the Daily Mirror. From 1919 he was the paper's children's editor, and wrote, under the pseudonym "Uncle Dick", the comic strip Pip, Squeak and Wilfred, drawn by A. B. Payne. In 1923 he handed it over to his assistant Don Freeman. In 1924 he was living in Herne Bay, Kent. He died in Switzerland in February 1938.
