Chick Checkley, portrait by Gordon Livingstone
Charles Ernest "Chick" Checkley, born in Perth in 1908, was, apart from a wartime posting to Canada with the RAF from 1941-1946, a lifelong editor at DC Thomson. He was a sub-editor on The Vanguard, Adventure, Family Star, Red Star and Red Letter before moving to picture story libraries in 1959. He edited the romance comic Star: Love Stories in Pictures. In 1961 he launched Commando, a 68-page digest-sized war comic, to compete with the picture library titles that were such a success for rivals Fleetway, and edited the title until his death in Dundee on 24 August 1971, after which he was succeeded by Ian Forbes.
