"Tammy the Sheepdog" from Swift, 1955-56
Geoffrey William Backhouse (b. Holywell, Flintshire, 16 November 1903; d. Haringey, London, 1 August 1978) studied art at Heatherleys and later worked for Modern Art Studios. He began drawing "Strongheart the Magnificent", the adventures of a German Sherpherd dog, in Comic Life in 1927. In the late 1930s he drew "The Stolen King" for Comic Cuts and "Buffalo Bill" for Butterfly. His background drawing animals led to him working on strip featuring zoologist George Cansdale for Eagle in 1954, and "Tammy the Sheepdog" for Swift in 1955-58. He also contributed wildlife illustrations to Look and Learn and Treasure, and illustrated children's books.
