George Montbard was born Charles Auguste Loye in Montbard, France, on 2 August 1841. He worked as an illustrator and caricaturist on Chronique Illustré, and then in 1868 for the Illustrated London News. After being involved in the Paris Commune in 1871 he was proscribed in France and moved to England, where he contributed to The Graphic, Judy, Funny Folks (including "Comic Fancy Page", 1874), and many other magazines. He was buried in Brittany on 5 August 1905.
