Ian James Chisholm was born in Dundee in 1921, and was a sub-editor at DC Thomson when The Beano was launched in 1938. He co-created Dennis the Menace with editor George Moonie and artist Davy Law, sketching the character on a cigarette packet, spiky hair and all, in discussions in a pub in 1950. He was the first editor of The Beezer in 1956, and later became editor of Mandy and Sparky. He died in Dundee on 16 March 1981.
