"Riders of the Range", Eagle, c. 1950

Jack Daniel was a Desert Rat, according to a brief potted biography in the Eagle's first birthday issue. He drew the early stories of "Riders of the Range", written by Charles Chilton, for the Eagle in 1950-51. He had a European style, with a bold line and an impressionistic colour sense, but unfortunately this did not please editor Marcus Morris, who replaced him with the more realistic Angus Scott, Jesús Blasco, and finally Frank Humphris. He also drew the newspaper strip Kit Conquest, sometimes assisted by George Davies. He died before the winter of 2009.
