"Sexton Blake", Knock-Out, 1949

John "Jack" Grandfield was born in the second quarter of 1911 in Kent. He was a prolific illustrator in the 1930s and '40s, contributing to magazines like The Passing Show, Good Housekeeping, Titbits and Woman's Weekly, and advertising campaigns for Butlin's and others. His only work in comics was a Sexton Blake serial, "Sexton Blake and the Strange Case of the Plastic Bullet", written specially for him by Ted Holmes, which ran in Knock-Out beginning in June 1949. However, he died before it was published, in Whitstable, Kent, in the first quarter of 1949, aged only 37.
