Matthew Campbell Veitch was born in Edinburgh on 13 March 1865. His father, Matthew senior, was an ironmonger's clerk. In his teens he was sent to live with his grandmother in St Giles, Midlothian, and apprenticed to a lithographic artist, and by 1881 he was working as a black and white artist in newspapers in Edinburgh. Some time between 1901 and 1911 he and his sister Jessie moved to Lambeth, London.

His art appeared in the comics of the Amalgamated Press, including the Halfpenny Wonder. He is believed to have drawn "Weary Willie and Tired Tim" for a while after the death of Tom Browne.

He died in Edmonton, Middlesex, in the fourth quarter of 1925.
