Ray Aspden is a cartoonist and writer. He wrote and drew "Philpot Bottles' Orfice Boys Own" for Denis Gifford's Ally Sloper magazine in 1976-77, and started writing comics for DC Thomson in the late 1970s, including "Stokehold Joe" for The Victor in 1980, and 27 issues of DC Thomson's Starblazer between 1979 ands 1986. In the 80s he wrote and drew humour strips "Jac-Do" and "Alys Ofalus" for two Welsh-language publications, Sboncyn and Deryn, and when Sboncyn was relaunched as Penbwl in 1989, he wrote and drew Huwi Hurt for it. Since 2004 he has written and drawn "Mekki" and "Our Bertie" for Spaceship Away. He also writes plays, and illustrates for historical magazines Wiðowinde and Facts and Fiction, and books including Derbyshire Folk Tales (2010).
