Road Scout was the term used for what were later called Patrols in the R.A.C. (and I think A.A.). In uniform, they waited where they were stationed, and saluted when recognizing the club badge on a passing vehicle. It was said that they stood to attention without saluting if a speed-trap lay ahead; but given that for most of their existence maximum permitted speed was down to the discretion of the driver, this seems unlikely.
